The flipped classroom teaching method!
What is a flipped classroom?
In flipped classrooms, also known as inverted classrooms, learners review class materials before lessons as homework. In-class time is dedicated to discussions, interactive exercises, and independent work that would have previously been completed at home — all under the guidance of the educator, who is present and available to respond to any questions that may arise.
Flipped Learning is particularly relevant in adult education which focuses on learning by doing and applying knowledge in a real setting. The flipped classroom approach is favoured in adult education as it allows for valuable face-to-face time for practical applications and a more personalised experience for learners. Research is indicating that courses that move to the ‘flipped’ model achieve much higher rates of retention and completion.
5 reasons why we love TED Ed!
- There are TED-Ed’s videos and lessons for almost every subject. You can use videos already online or you can upload your own video to YouTube and then create a TED Ed lesson around them. You can also include videos from some of the world’s best minds and create lessons around them!
- The platform is extremely user friendly, easy to set up and easy for students to follow. We also love the reporting aspect and instant notification you receive when you get feedback or replies to your discussions.
- Using TED Ed’s THINK section, you can assess how you learners have understood the video/lesson via multiple choice or open questions.
- You can satisfy learners who are hungry to learn more by providing extra reading and learning resources in the Dig Deeper Section.
- TED Ed encourages peer to peer learning which you can embrace by including guided discussions on your lesson topics.

ACTIVITY- Task you Adult learners to create their own TED Ed for a flipped classroom lesson
- Now that you know how to use TED Ed, get your adult learners to create their own TED Ed in a flipped classroom setting. The topic can be picked by the adult educator or allow the learner to choose their own subject to create the TED Ed upon.
Start by clicking https://ed.ted.com/videos
- Using Ted ED will not only improve the learner’s digital skills, but allowing learners to become the “teacher” in the flipped classroom setting will boost their confidence in the subject of the Ted ed. It is also a lot more engaging than the usual top down approach of a typical classroom.
